REPUBLIKA.CO.ID , BEIJING - The author and pioneer of the establishment of the culinary community “Jalan Sutra”, Bondan Winarno, said Indonesia could adopt the Thai way of promoting the culinary treasures of traditional foods to introduce them to the foreign country.

Bondan said, Thailand proved successful to globalize traditional food through "Thai Kitchen to the World", a culinary tourism promotion program. The government and stakeholders of Thailand use culinary tourism as a media campaign which already makes great results. Thai restaurants are now available in various parts of the world.

"From a target of about 10,000 restaurants around the world, now only less than five years since the launching of the program, there are 20 thousands Thai restaurants in the world, " said Bondan, who’s in Beijing in order to attend the Gourmand World Cookbook award Awards.

"Thus, although people do not go to Thailand, people around the world can taste Thai cuisine. People from London, for example, they like to eat Thai food. Then they think to take a vacation in this summer to Thailand, because eating at the original place is certainly more palatable. Finally, it has impacts to the tourism," he explained.

Indonesia, he said, has more various foods than the White Elephant country and could use a similar way to internationalize a wealth of traditional food.

"In Sumatra, there is Padang cuisine, and also Kapau and other dishes. Each area has a different culinary diversity, " he said .

According to him, the vision of the government, private and culinary practitioner should immediately unite to bring the traditional culinary archipelago to the international community.

Governments and relevant stakeholders, he added, should sharpen the vision and determine the direction of promotion of Indonesian cuisine.

"It does need a strong commitment from all parties, not only the government, but also all relevant stakeholders," he said.

"Indonesia has set 30 icons of culinary archipelago to be promoted to foreign countries and it is very good. However the unity of vision is important so the promotion of 30 icons of culinary archipelago could get maximum results and have impacts for Indonesia," he said.
